A monk awaits the start of a tree planting in one of the nearly decimated Church forests located at the bottom of the Menagesha Medhane-Alem and Mariam Monastery hill. The tree — older than living memory — shelters generations that have cared for the land and each other. This photograph speaks to continuity, faith, and the quiet strength that endures through time.

However, studies indicate that these Church forests are fast diminishing due to several reasons including encroachment and deforestation.
